Helen Hatcher ("Triathlon event"),For 2010 Cambridge Triathlon Club have chosen the Teenage Cancer Trust as their favoured charity.
Every year almost 200 teenagers and young adults across the East of England are diagnosed with cancer. Not only is this incredibly scarey, causing massive disruption in their lives when they should be moving on towards their own life but it can also be very isolating. Helen was lucky enough to survive cancer as a young adult and believes she owes a lot to triathlon for getting her back to life (even if it is at a slower rate!). In 2010 a Teenage Cancer Trust unit will be built at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. This will bring those young people together in an environment which will help to make the experience a little more bearable and improve their chances of survival.
As the building work goes on Helen is undertaking a series of 12 challenges (one for each month of 2010) to raise the money to make sure it is as good a unit as we can make it. One of these challenges is the Any Old Iron Man event, which you can also enter. Alternatively you can sponsor Helen in her efforts to complete the event. Through your involvement and sponsorship you can know that you are helping towards getting another young person back to life after cancer.
Thank you for your participation and good luck with your training and event too!
Helen.
Another year and another inspirational character. This year, Helen Hatcher is leading the charge with the Any Old Iron Man event. Helen is a teenage cancer surviver and, like Dave, manages to not let her treatment stand in the way of competing in triathlon.
'Any Old Iron Man' was conceived in 2009 by Dave 'Trotter' Eastman and some friends at Cambridge Triathlon Club. We wanted to create an inclusive long distance triathlon which is known as 'Any Old Iron Man' after Dave's London roots. As most people know, Dave doesn't let Parkinson's Disease stop him from competing in Triathlon, as you can read in his book, 'ere trotter warts and all. Inspired by Dave's true grit in continuing to compete, we devised the Any Old Iron Man in 2009 and the first year raised over £1,400 for The Parkinson's Disease Society.

They were later interviewed on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Sport Talk (MP3) and Trotter was featured on the BBC website.
